The Big Problem: Corporate Oppression

History Lesson in Corporate Greed: How the Cost of Living Went Up and How it Affects Society Today

Society must take time to remember the past, scrutinize the present, and analyze corporate motives that shape are future. Low prices have claimed a hefty toll on society. So let us take a moment to look at what corporations have done for us.

Women Entering The Workforce
If you don't agree-get educated on economics-then come back and we can debate. But Generally, The increase supply in labor, without an increase in demand for labor, resulted in lowered wages and thus doubled the cost of living.

There was a large corporate push to allow women in the workforce way back when-(not that I am against it in any way). However the corporate proponents of the women's movement only did so for purely economic gain. They new the average American had no grasp on modern economics and would not realize the true reason behind the corporate support of the women's labor movement. With women working, it doubled the workforce, which then lowered wages for everyone. This was not the only factor though and I'm sure one could rant about all that was involved. We went from a society where both parents
get to work to both parents have to work. Hooray for all the children left at home and raised by the media!- Oh wait that's me...damn...

Family Structural and Social Dysfunction
Read the news, statistics, study psychology or just take my word for it. With both parents away from the house or completely consumed by their careers, the rest of the family suffers.

There is far more dysfunction and other problems in family life than I have time to write about, but some of them include, growing up in a broken home, being breast fed by the media, teen-sex, teen pregnancy, the prolific amount of abortions-(I am not against them just the overwhelming number of irresponsible individuals that get them and treat it like birth control), ADD ADHD and other phenomenon invented by the pharmaceutical companies to sell more medication, and of course the general lack of responsibility or interest by the masses in community, society politics anywhere-apathy.

No Innovation and an Overworked Middle Class
Coming home exhausted from work only to deal domestic obligations; there is no free time left to think with an active mind. The body is worn out, but more importantly the mind is exhausted as well. There are many recent articles about zombies in America, corporations and political regimes have made policies to create this situation. If society has no active free time to think than we cannot innovate or get an education.

Retailers Thrive On Employee Ignorance

Actively Encouraging Management to Trample on Worker's Rights
Retailer managers are encouraged test their employees knowledge of the labor laws by pushing them to the limit. If the words "labor laws"are mentioned, the employer will back off or try and brush it off and make the employee feel like they are in trouble or they make a point of telling employees how they are so easily replaceable and expendable . This has been my experience as a young adult working at K-Mart for a year straight out of high school. They all of course model after Wal-Mart Which is covered in many different documentaries.

Retailers Try and Weed out intelligent Free Thinkers
If you get bold and boisterous, or simply attempt to inform your fellow employees of the labor laws (that by law have to be posted in the break room anyway) you risk losing your job. Corporations spend millions on discouraging union formation or presence- they will gladly pay very close attention to you and get you fired or pressure you into quitting if you try to start or get a union involved in an otherwise untouched industry.

Retailers Armed With a Throw Away Labor Force
As a rule of thumb, retailers only try and recruit automatons, preferring fresh out of high school. They are worse than the military recruiters. The pay is so low, and the jobs are so bad, that the corporations make more money laying people off before their 90 day probationary period is up and their pay raise kicks in. Here is the math.

All They Want Out of You is 3 Months
After 3 months or just before, you can bet they will give you harder tasks and longer hours. They will purposely and admittingly screw up your work schedule just to see if they can push you hard enough to quit.

pay 250,000 dumb employees minimum wage for 90 days or the
same amount of people 75 cents more an hour
250,000 x $6.75 =$1.6875 Million an Hour
250,000 x $7.50= $1.875 Million an Hour

The difference: $187,500 per hour

This is considered profit and doesn't even take into account the numbers they save in not having to provide you with health benefits; a number that hourly is significantly larger. I guarantee you the money they save does not go into their employee health care programs or lack there of.

Remember this when you Go Back to Work!

Editors Note: I am not a disgruntled former employee, I worked in retail for a year fresh out of high school and I willingly left my job many years ago for a world of hope, opportunity and a decent living wage, I wasn't angry or bitter with my former employer I came to the understanding that there was no opportunity there for any kind of life. For me it was a waste of time just to be there because the ability to think freely about a career alone is worth more per hour than they could pay me. Simply put it cost less to be Homeless, in terms of the potential of my thoughts.
