5 Reasons why Mac Won't Gain Market Share

Will Windows Users Convert to Vista or Migrate to Mac?
A response to the MacWorld Article
There are many stories being ran about users being untrusting of Microsoft and the next release. This is said to create a migration pattern to Linux. That is a logical result. However the stories about Mac market share doubling are completely out of the realm of reality. These stories are coming from die hard Mac fans and are simply posted to generate hype for the OS. It is wishful thinking on their part.Windows users will not trade in one dictator for another. Most Windows users have already made their choice between the OS's. Mac doesn't measure up and the only migratory candidate is Linux. The Ubuntu release has gained particular momentum in the linux world, as it is easy to use and software is easy to install. The Mac OS isn't even an option for Windows user migration here's why:

1. Ubuntu and other linux releases are more likely candidates and already have gained momentum and have corporate business experience. If there is a switch it will be to a more corporate friendly product in the form of a linux release not a Mac.

2.Most Windows users and corporations on the platform are too hooked to migrate, most corporations do not care of DRM management or PDL Personal Digital Liquidity Issues.

3.The defectors (that the MacWorld article refers) of the Microsoft world are home and small business users that will want a similar product with similar performance, more flexibility, and user freedom, They won't trade a beat-up Toyota Corolla for a Ford Focus-while both are crappy, Mac does not have the presence impress most of the corporate or intelligent home user world. But the users who do defect will go the Honda route and move to Linux.

4. Microsoft's next service release is not going to be platform dependant. Read my other posts about their new plan. Mac is MIA in the war for the web, their strongest tool is not their OS, it is their Ipod. As Bill Gates said " The future is the Internet". The future is the internet subcription land, new web 2.0 services and applications and an entire client platform ran from the web is what is in store from Microsoft. Microsoft has shifted all their weight into the World Wide Web and so far, Apple has a strong presence with itunes but not their entire OS.

5. The other competitive forces and benefactors in this arena are Google and AOL. Google will probably benefit the most as they will release their complete web based client desktop solution and suite of web applications before the Vista Release. I mention AOL because they have the most experience in delivering a custom web solution. They will be a contender if they can host their AOL desktop from the net in its entirety.

Conclusion:
The Defectors of Microsoft will not Migrate to Mac OS, they will go Linux or Google, as they are the most flexible user friendly solutions available. The future is the Internet, and mobility, if the Apple people can get a handheld to compete with the UMPC and Microsofts Ipod Killer, and a more versatile suite of web applications then they may have a fighting chance.

Investors: Watch Apple for their handheld product, smaller yet as versatile as a laptop, bigger than a pda, and as cool and sleek as the ipod. If these products don't appear, look to google, AOL, and Microsoft to lead the market
